AO research excellence aims to improve care worldwide
The AO Program for Education and Excellence in Research (AOPEER), as outlined by Risto Kontio (pictured above) at the AO Davos Courses in 2018, offers surgeons and researchers tools and training in clinical research through online material and face-to-face courses.
The global rollout of AOPEER continued successfully in 2018. New content—a lecture on study design, an instructional video on informed consent and study conduct, an e-module on health economics, and a white paper on data protection—was published in AOPEER’s online platform.
In addition, 14 Principles of Clinical Research courses have been conducted in 13 countries, with more than 600 participants. Participant feedback was excellent, and the program was further improved based on the comments received.
To establish the AOPEER faculty, the AOPEER office organized teacher seminars along nine of these courses. By end of 2018, AOPEER courses were offered with local and regional AOPEER teachers in Latin America, Middle East and Asia Pacific. Similar offers will be developed next in Europe and North America in 2019.
The AOPEER Taskforce continues providing direction on how to further develop the program. A strategy workshop held in August 2018 with invited stakeholders from all AO Clinical Divisions and the AO Education Institute to define goals and ambitions for AOPEER beyond 2019.
